The Mindful Movement

Shore-seeker, dream-chaser and heart-centred business woman.

I blink my eyes open, stretch beneath the covers and take a deep breath. Outside, I can hear the waves lapping against the shore while the first rays of light, seep into the room. In these moments of stillness, I give thanks for my life.

If you’d told me life would lead me here six years ago, I would never have believed you. I was stressed, sad and bent out of shape. My varsity boyfriend and I had broken up and work had replaced sleep. While rushing around at a corporate team-building event, I literally stumbled onto a yoga mat. Eager to prioritise my fitness, I signed up for classes and began practising yoga. Although these early experiences didn’t ignite a spiritual connection, they did inspire me to slow down and bring balance back to my life.

A few months later, I got the worst call of my life. My dad – my best friend – had lost his life in a really traumatic way.

Everything went dark and I spiralled into the depths of depression. How could this have happened? I remember thinking that I had to dig deep and find a way to work through the pain.

I returned to the studio and rolled out my mat. I moved when I could and curled up when I couldn’t. Grief was always near but I committed to my practice.

Inhale. Exhale. Feel and release.

Sometimes tears rolled down my face as waves of sadness rushed to the surface. I wanted to grab my things and race out the door but my teacher encouraged me to breath through the pain. It wasn’t easy or comfortable but I found moments of peace.

Days became months and my body grew stronger. With physical strength came emotional strength and I coped with daily stresses, long after class was over. For the first time in forever, a light flickered within me. This wasn’t the old me. This was a new me. Inspired, excited and encouraged to go deeper.

I began practising yoga as often as I could, deepening my knowledge with new teachers in new places. We meditated on mountains and practised headstands on islands. I sweated it out in studios and found peace on empty beaches. The more I studied, the more I felt compelled to share the healing effects of yoga with others.

In April 2017, I resigned from my job and founded The Mindful Movement. My path ahead lit up with love as I took my first steps into the future. Since then, beautiful souls from all walks of life have joined me on this journey. We play, we rest, we push through difficult moments. I feel honoured to hold space for others to simply be themselves.

To each and every soul who has taught me and trusted me, I thank you.

Together we can spread love and kindness throughout the world.

Together, we are one.

Namaste.

Niki van Velden- Manifest Yoga Studio

Yoga teacher, lover of metaphysics, Studio Owner, Business woman and Mother

As a teenager I loved sports. I grew up in England and in summer if the sun was out so was I. Playing tennis, baseball, running, competing in athletics or gymnastics. I could be found doing anything that involved movement and play. If the sun wasn’t out then I was to be found in the sports hall playing badminton, basketball and anything else I could find to satisfy my desire to be active.

Then life got in the way, corporate life, family life and everything in between. Soon I found myself facing the big 50 and I had a deep desire to find myself again and to recapture my love of movement. I started running and re-kindled a passion for yoga. I watched by body regain its youthfulness. I became stronger and more flexible. I was stunned by what my body was capable of doing. I was turning back the clock.

Today I teach yoga several times a week and maintain my own practice of ninety minutes a day. I continue to get stronger, more flexible and am continually amazed at what my body can do.

I hope to inspire people of all ages to keep active. To help them find joy and perfection in play and movement, to find peace in their breath and to offer the best version of themselves to the world.
